It’s a rare season when St. Peter Chanel is not favored to finish among the top three teams in the Division III state wrestling tournament. This is one of those seasons, as teams like Marion Pleasant, Troy Christian and Monroeville have moved to the top of the favorites list.
But don’t count the Firebirds out for long. The young squad finished second to Waynedale on Saturday night in a tight three-way race for the district championship at Maple Heights.
Four of Chanel’s seven state qualifiers - 103-pounder Cody Tschantz, Danny Orrill (125), Danny Collier (130) and Cody Walters (152) — are freshmen. It is the first time the Firebirds will send that many freshmen to the state tournament.
And a sophomore, 119-pounder Mike Kovach, claimed a championship.
“The kids battled their way through here pretty good,” Chanel coach Graham Coghill said. “If we can fill in at a few spots, we’re going to be tough to deal with.”
Kovach was trailing Lutheran West’s Colin Dennis, 1-0, in the third period in the finals. After taking the lead with a reversal, he quickly put Dennis on his back for a pin in 5:08. “I got my revenge,” said Kovach, who lost to Dennis in the sectional finals the previous two seasons. “It was real important [to finish first]. I was fourth here last year and I was just glad to get to state. This year my goal is to win state, not just place.”
Chanel was seeking its third consecutive district title. The Firebirds won five of the previous seven district championships.
Waynedale finished with 153.5 points to Chanel’s 150. Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy was third with 147.5 points, followed by Cuyahoga Heights with 113.5.
VCA was the only team with three champions — junior Shelton Morris (125 pounds), senior Jared Kusar (152) and freshman Alex Utley (160). Defending state champion David Stiltner (145) and Jared Neff (189) finished first for Waynedale.
Kusar and Utley were among the tournament’s most dominant wrestlers. Kusar advanced to the state tournament for the fourth time. He was a two-time place-winner in Division II. He had two first-period pins, a technical fall, and an 8-4 decision over Ronald Pajestka of Cuyahoga Heights in the finals.
“I’ve been working hard,” Kusar said. “I’m in good shape. My technique’s better. I’m going in to win.” Utley had three pins, including a fall in 4:36 in his championship victory over Woodridge’s Jeremy Hathaway.
“It feels good,” Utley said. “I was confident coming in. Practicing with Jared [Kusar] all season helps a lot. I’m excited about next week. I just want to give my best effort and do as good as I can.”
Other champions included Berkshire’s Blake Thoreson (130) and Travis Porter (215), Beachwood’s Alex Dronzek (103), Cuyahoga Heights’ Robert Pajestka (140), and Kirtland’s Don Stocum (285). Porter remained unbeaten, improving to 38-0. Dronzek, a sophomore, escaped in the final 30 seconds for a 7-6 victory over Loudonville’s Scott Spreng in the finals.
Pajestka, a senior, qualified for his fourth state tournament with a 3-2 victory over Chanel’s Andrew Schafer. Pajestka has never placed at the state tournament. He wrestled with a broken wrist last season, suffered the day before the district tournament. “It feels good,” Pajestka said. “This is my first district championship. Hopefully I can get that place this year.”

Adam Koballa is the 2009 NAIA 141 lbs National Champion. Congradulations to the Koballa family! bracket

NAIA East Region Final Brackets
141: Adam Koballa Notre Dame College def. Zach Flake, Campbellsville; 4-2 SV1
This was an absolute battle. Koballa and Flake both attacked very well with Koballa barely getting the best of Flake by catching his ankle in the closing moments of sudden victory to get the two points and the victory.
Notre Dame Wrestling...
The Notre Dame Wrestling team completed its season with a program-best fifth-place finish at the 52nd Annual NAIA National Championships in Oklahoma City.
The championship tournament was held March 5-7. NDC had five grapplers place at the tournament, led by junior Adam Koballa (Twinsburg), who won the national championship at 141 pounds. Sophomore Tyler Savage (Carlisle, Ohio) and freshman Jeffrey Pelton (Bellevue, Ohio) placed third in the 125-pound and 149-pound divisions, respectively.
Sophomore Thomas Straughn (Massillon) placed fourth at 157 pounds, while sophomore Dante Rini (Massillon) placed seventh at 125. All five of the Falcons earned All-American status as a result of their top-eight finishes.
Koballa, ranked No. 5 at 141 going into nationals, beat four ranked wrestlers on his way to becoming the Falcons' second national champion. NDC's Victer Crenshaw earned the NAIA crown at 157 last season.
After an opening-round tech fall victory, Koballa defeated No. 8 Ethan Hall from California Baptist by score of 8-4. The junior then won a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Dickinson State's (N.D.) Eli Zuniga, ranked No. 6, in the quarterfinals. Another one-point win followed in the semis, a 7-6 decision over No. 4-ranked Jon Henslee from Grand View (Iowa).
The decision over Henslee set-up Koballa's championship showdown with Zach Flake, the No. 2-ranked wrestler from Campbellsville (Ky.). Koballa and Flake battled for three periods, with Koballa victorious in the end by 4-2 decision.
The run in Oklahoma City closed out Koballa's 2008-09 season with a 30-5 record in 35 bouts. For the season, he won 14 bouts by decision, nine by fall, four by tech fall, and three by major decision. He ranked third on the Falcon squad with 128 team points. Koballa is now a two-time NAIA All-American; he was runner-up at 141 pounds at last year's National Championships.

J Jaggers Division I 2009 wrestling championships
 |
Terry Gilliam/Associated PressOhio State's J. Jaggers successfully defended his NCAA wrestling crown on Saturday. He was a four-time state high school champion at Chanel High.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- One expert said Ohio State winning the 2009 Division I Wrestling Championship would have been the greatest upset in NCAA wrestling history.
The Buckeyes almost made it happen Saturday night at the Scottrade Center, and despite senior J. Jaggers (141 pounds) repeating as a national champ and runners-up in juniors Reece Humphrey (133) and Mike Pucillo (184), OSU fell 4 1/2 points short of Iowa, 96½ to 92.
Jaggers, a four-time state champ at Chanel High, dazzled the 17,385 fans with slick and slithery takedowns plus a cradle on Old Dominion senior Ryan Williams to score a convincing 10-4 victory.
"A lot of people said I wouldn't win it again," a beaming Jaggers said. "They called me a one-year wonder. Well, you don't stumble into two NCAA titles. It's hard enough to win one title, and darn harder to repeat."

NCAA championships day one...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 6, 2009) - Just being invited to the NCAA Championships was not enough – senior wrestler Drew Gardella (Sagamore Hills, OH-pictured) wanted to accomplish the one thing that has eluded him during his career. This weekend he put his name among the school’s all-time greats by becoming the eighth All-American in Case Western Reserve University wrestling history.
Gardella began his quest on Friday with a 12-2 decision win over former All-American Tyler Branham [New Jersey]. He would then lose his next match 15-4 to returning national champion Jacob Naig [Wartburg] which sent him down into the third-place bracket. He then recorded a 5-0 win over the number seven seed Dan Vito [Merchant Marine] which would set up a match with a well-known opponent to Gardella, John Carroll’s Dan Mizener.
Gardella had wrestled four matches against his cross-town rival already this season, with both him and Mizener sitting at two wins apiece. But Gardella would take the series lead on wrestling’s biggest stage by getting a 9-7 decision win over Mizener which earned him All-American status.
At day’s end, Gardella had compiled a 3-1 record and will continue wrestling tomorrow in hopes of earning a third place title in the 149-pound weight class.
Freshman national qualifier Isaac Dukes (Ravenna, OH) was given the daunting task of wrestling returning national champion Aaron Wernimont [Wartburg] in his bracket’s opening round. Wernimont came into the day with a 41-0 record on the season, including a win over Dukes back in November. Dukes would give him all he had, but Wernimont would escape with a narrow 7-6 victory bumping Dukes into the third-place bracket.
Dukes would then lose to Johanson Quist [Luther] in his next match, ending his run in the bracket and his first career trip to the NCAA Championships. Dukes wraps up his season with a 29-11 record and the University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year award.
ncaa championships day two...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 7, 2009) - Senior Drew Gardella (Sagamore Hills, OH-pictured) notched another win on day two and captured the sixth place title at the NCAA Championships today at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He would go 4-3 over the weekend while taking on the best Division III wrestlers in the nation.
In his opening match on Saturday, Gardella recorded a 6-2 decision win over Muhlenberg’s Robert Kein which included back points late in the match. Gardella would then meet the number two seed Jacob Naig [Wartburg], who he had lost 15-4 against on day one, this time closing the gap but still dropping the match 8-4. Naig would go on to win the third place title.
Gardella would then drop his final match to the number one seed Willy Hilst [Augsburg] to end his day and receive sixth place honors in the event. Case Western Reserve finished with ten total points which landed them in 25th place out of the 62 teams that participated in the brackets. Wartburg would place first in the event after finishing the weekend with 117.5 points and two individual champions.
